Centrist Republicans in 2008

To fully understand the importance of centrist Republican candidates in the 2008 elections, it is important to take a look at the results of this year’s hard fought Republican primaries and see how these candidates performed in the general election. It is in primaries, after all, where the voters must choose the candidate that best represents their own positions on the issues, the District at large, and the chances for victory in November. Their performance in the fall is, therefore, a good indication of the types of Republicans

Election Wrap-Up

First, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate President-elect Barack Obama. He conducted a near-flawless campaign, inspired millions and ushered in the largest voter turnout since 1908. That is democracy at its best, and as a result, I am proud to be an American today.

RLC Announces Final Slate of 2008 Candidates

The Republican Leadership Council (RLC), led by Senator Jack Danforth (MO), and Governor Christine Todd Whitman (NJ), today proudly announced their final slate of candidates for the 2008 election.

Final Candidate Endorsements

The RLC will be announcing our final slate of endorsed candidates in early October. To be considered for RLC endorsement, candidates must fill out our survey by close of business on October 1st. A Strong Leadership

A leader is a person who can unite and work on both sides of the aisle to address domestic and foreign policy. Nancy Pelosi, Barack Obama and the Democratic leadership have failed to address the energy crisis in America. The Speaker of the House went to recess without a debate or a vote to address gas prices - they are not focused on the concerns of American people.

Corporate Taxes: Right Question, Wrong Answer

Senators Byron Dorgan (D-North Dakota) and Carl Levin (D-Michigan) deserve some credit for being smart enough to go to the GAO and ask a sensible question when they commissioned a recent study on why more than two thirds of foreign corporations and about half of the domestic companies doing business in the US get away with not paying corporate taxes in any given year.

The Democrats Fiddle While America Burns

In my years living in DC and watching American politics I've had plenty of chances to observe political opportunism, legislative neglect and pure partisan idiocy at their worst. Yet I'm not sure that I've seen anything to match the pure spite and arrogant irresponsibility of the current crop of Democrats in Congress.

The Numbers Are In

The supply siders had it right with the lower of taxes. With the lower rates on income, dividends, and earnings, the economy grew faster. With that, dividends, income etc grew. The rich invested less in tax shelters and taxes grew.

Phil Gramm and the Unpolitical Truth

Former Senator and McCain campaign advisor Phil Gramm has obviously spent too much time out of office and in the private sector, because this week he committed the ultimate political crime. He told the truth. In an interview with the Washington Times he is being quoted as having said:

SCOTUS limits policy on campaign finance

The Election Law Blog has a helpful summary of today's Supreme Court decision against limits on campaign financing. The Court ruled that just because a candidate is wealthy does not justify increasing the fundraising limits on his opponent. This follows previous court rulings that frown on limiting the fund raising of candidates.

Thank you to Lt. Gov. Steele

It is with fondness and appreciation that the RLC bids farewell to one of our co-chairs, Lt. Gov. Michael Steele. Steele will be taking a step back from some of his previous commitments, including the RLC, to focus fully on GOPAC, which he chairs. The RLC is pleased to partner with GOPAC for a number of events and look forward to continuing to work with Steele and his staff on future endeavors. I am personally very grateful for his efforts in helping to get the RLC to where we are today. Best of luck to him and to GOPAC in their very important work.

McCain Should Reject Public Funding

In an effort to maximize his fundraising potential Barrack Obama has announced that he will finance his campaign entirely with private contributions. While his campaign presented this as a populist move based on his large number of small contributions from individual donors, it was no coincidence that he made the statement while sitting at a roundtable with leaders of Democratic PACs and the president of the AFL-CIO.

Energy Dependence

We do have a major leap in energy prices here in this country. No one can deny that. The problem is that we have some knuckleheads in Congress dealing with the problem. Instead of looking were we might come across some more oil for example, Congress narrowly defeated a bill to tax the oil companies more. Their Profits are too high says those in Congress (mostly the Democrats lead by Pelosi and Reid). Who gives them the right to decide what is too high?

Food For Thought

What is Gov Blagojevich up to these days? He seems to have caused the state government to come to a complete halt. They cannot get a Capital bill passed because Speaker Madigan feels he can't be trusted to spend it properly. With the conviction of Tony Rezko recently, the Gov might be looking over his shoulder. He ran on a platform to end pay to play in IL. Well, he just made the others look like amatuers. Speaker Madigan is putting out information now on impeachment. Can this be a sign of things to come? Is he doing this to put his daughte
