The Maine Republican Leadership Council (MRLC) is a state chapter of the Republican Leadership Council (RLC) which was founded by former U.S. Senator John Danforth and Governor Christine Todd Whitman.
The RLC mission is to return to the fundamentals of the Republican Party and to advocate for the historic Republican principals of liberty, individual responsibility and personal freedom. The RLC’s vision is a party unified by the basic tenets of fiscal responsibility and personal freedom but one which allows diverse opinions on social issues.
RLC members share the belief that our elected officials have a responsibility to spend our tax dollars wisely. RLC also believes in a strong national defense and government with a limited role in American’s lives.
The RLC is not defined by one issue but rather a mission to unite the party with our many shared beliefs.
Building a strong party at the grassroots level is one of the core missions of the RLC, and the committee is focused on identifying, educating and investing in today’s local and state leaders.
Maine has a strong and long history of electing officials who share the RLC’s beliefs. Margaret Chase Smith, Bill Cohen, John McKernan and John Reed as well as our current United States Senators have earned the respect and admiration of not only their Maine constituents, but also from people across the country for their hard work and thoughtful approach to issues.
We are honored that our United States Senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, former Governor McKernan and longtime party leader Mert Henry serve on the MRLC honorary committee.
Maine State Senator Peter Mills and Representative Meredith Strand Burgess lead the MRLC, which includes legislative leaders from both the Maine House and Senate.
The group’s 30-member advisory council consists of former elected officials and experienced party leaders from across the state.
The Maine RLC is committed to building a strong Maine Republican Party at the grassroots level and training and assisting legislative and local candidates.
